IIO Seeks Witnesses to Incident in Surrey

SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office of BC has assumed jurisdiction for investigating an incident involving the Surrey RCMP.

On March 9, 2014, at approximately 5:50 p.m., officers responded to a complaint in the area of 68 Avenue and 145 A Street in Surrey, BC. It was reported that an adult male was standing in traffic and causing a disturbance.  Officers located the male affected person and took him into custody. Shortly thereafter, it was determined that the affected person had sustained an injury, reportedly to his arm. He was taken to hospital and treated for his injury.

The IIO was notified and deployed investigators first thing this morning. Initial investigative tasks will include identifying and interviewing witnesses and reviewing other evidence.  Additional support is being provided by the investigator who works with affected persons and their families. The Surrey RCMP remain responsible for any and all concurrent investigations.

This incident occurred in a public setting.  Any potential witnesses are asked to call the IIO Info line at 1-855-446-8477.

As set by the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations, and ensure transparency through public reporting.

Due to the preliminary stage of the investigation, no additional information is available at the present time.
