IIO Team Asserts Jurisdiction in Fatal Crash in Surrey

SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirms that it has asserted jurisdiction in the case of a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred last week in Surrey.

On Dec. 27, 2012, at 1400 hours, a vehicle operated by a 72 year-old male collided with a police vehicle in the intersection of 184th Street and 56th Avenue in Surrey.  The IIO was notified at the time however based on the driver’s reported condition, and the lack of serious injury, jurisdiction was not asserted.

On Dec. 31, 2012, jurisdiction was asserted after the IIO was notified that the man’s medical condition had deteriorated and that he was not expected to survive.  He passed away in hospital later that day.

IIO investigators have been assigned to the investigation including the Senior Investigator, Affected Persons who will provide support and assistance to the family.  Investigators have received full cooperation from the Surrey RCMP and will work within the terms agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the Chief Civilian Director and B.C.’s police services in July 2012.

No further information will be provided at this time.
