New Investigations – Jurisdiction Sustained

IIO 14-00123 Chilliwack RCMP

Just prior to midnight on February 16, 2014, an adult male sustained injuries while being taken into custody after allegedly fleeing from a motor vehicle incident near Vedder Road and Sweltzer Creek in Chilliwack.

This incident was reported to the IIO by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner on July 15, 2014.

IIO 14-00131 Nanaimo RCMP

At approximately noon on July 30, 2014, an adult male sustained dog bite injuries while being taken into custody allegedly for outstanding warrants.

IIO 14-00132 Surrey Transit Police

Just before midnight on July 31, 2014, Transit Police responded to a complaint of an adult male causing a disturbance near the Surrey Central Skytrain Station. While officers were transporting the man to hospital, he became unresponsive and could not be resuscitated.

IIO 14-00139 Vancouver VPD

Just before noon on August 8, 2014, an adult male sustained injury to his arm after a motorcycle he was operating collided with a police vehicle near Main and Hastings Streets.

In all four cases, jurisdiction was asserted and sustained.  The investigations are on-going.  Where there are concurrent investigations into the actions of the affected persons, the local police agency maintains full jurisdiction.

In addition, there have been a number of IIO deployments across the province where preliminary investigations are underway; however the sustained jurisdiction decision remains pending.
