New Investigations – Jurisdiction Sustained

IIO 14-118 Abbotsford

In the early afternoon, July 5, officers from the Abbotsford Police department responded to a complaint near Clearbrook Road. Officers located an adult male fitting the description provided in the complaint. During the exchange with officers, the affected person reportedly attempted to flee. While being taken into custody, the affected person sustained a hand injury that required surgery to repair.

IIO 14-121 Surrey

On July 9, RCMP reported a collision that occurred at the intersection of 40 Avenue and 184th Street involving an off duty officer and a civilian vehicle. The police officer sustained minor injuries. The occupants of the civilian vehicle sustained various injuries, the most serious to a 9 year old girl. She was transported to BC Children’s Hospital for treatment.

IIO 14-122 Vancouver

At approximately 7 p.m. on July 13, VPD officers responded to an unrelated call near the south side of the 300 block of E. Hastings Street. During this response, the officer driving the police wagon drove over the foot of a female who was in the laneway. The affected person sustained serious injuries to her foot and was transported to hospital for medical care.

IIO 14-128 Quesnel

Just before midnight, on July 20, several off duty police officers were at a social function at a private residence. According to the police, a physical interaction occurred between two officers resulting in one sustaining a serious injury to his foot.

IIO 14-129 Powell River

On the evening of July 26, RCMP officers were on foot patrol during Sea Fair. Officers identified an adult male and observed him to be non-compliant with a court order. While he was being taken into custody, the affected person fled the area and reportedly went over an embankment. Officers eventually located the affected person and took him into custody. On July 27, he complained of various injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

In all five cases, jurisdiction was asserted and sustained. The investigations are on-going.

 

Chief Civilian Director Makes Report to Crown Counsel

Chief Civilian Director Richard Rosenthal of the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has made a report to Crown Counsel with respect to an officer-involved incident that took place in Princeton on March 22, 2014.
