SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has released the scene of the fatal incident that took place on September 18, 2015 in Burnaby.

According to police, on September 18, 2015 at approximately 7 am, officers from multiple agencies responded to a call for shots fired at a residence in the 3800 block of Frances St.

Since then, the IIO has completed a significant number of investigative tasks. A number of officers from both the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team (RCMP) and the Vancouver Police Department have been designated as witnesses and are cooperating with the investigation. Interviews have been conducted with civilian witnesses including the residents who lived in the home. Other residents who live in the area have been cooperative with IIO investigators and have provided much assistance to the investigation.

The IIO has been working with the Integrated Homicide Team as well as the BC Coroners Service to ensure all of the investigative requirements are met.

With respect to the male who was involved in the police incident, he has been identified by the BC Coroners Service as Kenneth Robert Hanna of Vancouver. He sustained multiple gunshot injuries, the source of which will be part of the investigation. He was deceased at the scene. The IIO and the BC Coroners Service are responsible for this investigation.

IHIT and the BC Coroners Service remain responsible for all  investigations related to the other deceased male now identified as Matthew Charles Miles.
