Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is providing an update into the death of a man in Burnaby that occurred on July 4, 2025 (IIO 2025-164).

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., officers with the Burnaby RCMP responded to a 911 call in the 7000 block of Hillview Street. Police were responding to concerns about a man creating a disturbance and possibly suffering a mental health issue.

Police arrived and were accompanied by a mental health nurse at the time. Officers located the man outside of a residence and went to take him into custody. During the interaction, the man went into medical distress and was given aid. Paramedics arrived and he was then taken to the hospital but later died.

To date, IIO investigators have interviewed multiple civilian witnesses and obtained statements from police. They have also collected evidence, including CCTV footage and cell phone video.

The IIO is continuing to conduct interviews, collect evidence, and obtain further reports and information.

The IIO investigation into the incident continues.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
