Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is providing an update about an investigation into an August 2025 incident (IIO 2025-211).

At about 4:30 a.m. on August 30, 2025, officers with the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment responded to a call about a man who was reported to be in distress and screaming in the 20900 block of Lougheed Highway.

Five officers arrived, and the man who was the subject of the call was found to be laying down in traffic lanes on the highway. Police placed him in handcuffs and held him to prevent further injury.

The man was in his late 30s and was declared brain dead on September 11, 2025. He was subsequently pronounced deceased on October 11, 2025.

IIO investigators are currently finishing interviews and awaiting autopsy and toxicology reports. Investigators have also canvassed the area for witnesses and video.
