Update Regarding IIO Investigation into July 2025 Arrest in Saanich (2025-181)

At about 7:30 p.m. on July 15, 2025, officers with the Saanich Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls that a man on foot was threatening drivers and acting erratically in traffic in the 4500 block of Granville Avenue.
Multiple officers responded and took the man into custody with the use of a police service dog. No other force was used during the arrest.
The affected person, a man in his 40s, has since been released from hospital and is recovering. His injuries are confirmed to meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.
Interviews of all identified witnesses are completed, as are interviews with officers. The IIO is awaiting more detailed medical information to complete the investigation.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
