Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is providing an update to an investigation into a May incident and arrest in Vancouver where one man was injured (2025-132).
Around 10:50 a.m. on May 28, 2025, members of the Vancouver Police Department responded to a report of a man who had been brandishing a weapon in a common area of a residential building in the 0 block of West Hastings Street.
When police arrived, they were told the man was inside a residential unit, and members of the Emergency Response Team were called to assist.
Some time later, the man was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The IIO was notified of the incident the same day it occurred and started investigating.
The IIO is now confirming the man’s injuries do meet the definition of serious harm as defined in Part 11 of the Police Act. The IIO can also confirm the affected person was in possession of an air-powered pellet gun closely resembling a firearm.
To date, IIO investigators have interviewed several civilian witnesses and multiple police officers.
Investigators have also collected evidence from multiple sources, including video footage.
They now expect to conduct further interviews and analyze forensic evidence and reports.
The IIO investigation into the incident continues.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
