Updates Investigation into August 2025 Incident in Prince George (2025-223)
Case: 2025-223 Incident Date: August 24, 2025 Location: Prince George Detachment: Prince George Agency: RCMP Incident Classification: Death Case Status: Open - Investigation in ProgressSurrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is updating an investigation into an incident that occurred in Prince George on August 24, 2025 (IIO 2025-223).
Shortly after 5 a.m., members of the RCMP attended a home in the area of Village Avenue and Lillooet Street in response to a noise complaint.
When officers arrived, it is reported they attempted to speak to a man believed to be the source of the complaint and observed him holding an object or weapon in a room. The officers closed the door to the room and called for more assistance.
Police re-entered the room at about 5:45 a.m. and the man was found to be in medical distress. He was subsequently pronounced deceased.
The IIO was notified of the incident in September 2025 by the public and began investigating.
Thus far, IIO investigators have collected evidence, including body-worn camera footage from police. Analysis of that evidence remains ongoing. They are also continuing to speak with civilian witnesses and conduct interviews with police officers.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
