Afternoon Update to IIO investigation of VPD officer-involved shooting

SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirms that the scene of a VPD-involved shooting has been cleared and released.

On Oct. 29, 2012, at 21:05 hours (9:05 p.m.), the IIO was notified about an officer involved shooting that occurred near East Hastings in the city of Vancouver. One person was shot and did not survive his injuries. No officers were injured during the incident.

The IIO deployed 10 investigative personnel who conducted investigative tasks and secured a range of evidence.

The IIO confirms that the involved officer’s firearm has been secured. A knife was recovered at the scene. Interviews with 18 witnesses have been conducted. The notification of the next of kin has been completed.

The IIO and the involved police service (VPD) are expected to work co-operatively within the terms agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the Chief Civilian Director and B.C.’s police services in July 2012.

Information related to the deceased remains under the jurisdiction of the BC Coroners Service.

No additional information is expected to be released at this time.

As set by the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations and ensure transparency through public reporting.
