Chief Civilian Director Deploys Investigators to Saanich

SURREY – The IIO confirms it has deployed investigators to an incident that occurred this morning in Saanich, B.C.
Shortly before 5:30 a.m., a Central Saanich Police officer observed a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction on West Saanich Road, between Spartan Road and Hartland Road. According to the IIO notification made by police, the officer made a U-turn with the intent of conducting a traffic stop.
Shortly thereafter, the officer located the vehicle off road. The driver of the vehicle, a male adult (affected person), sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital.
The IIO was notified at 6:30 a.m. and has deployed investigators to conduct a preliminary investigation. They will be supported by additional IIO investigators including dedicated specialists for Affected Persons, Forensics and Traffic Reconstruction.
There are road closures in the area. Currently, local police are processing the scene and will release it as soon as possible.
The IIO will work cooperatively with Saanich Police as per the Memorandum of Understanding. Saanich Police will maintain full jurisdiction over any parallel investigation into the actions of the affected person.
