Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is seeking key witnesses to a fatal officer-involved shooting involving the Vancouver Police Department.

The incident took place at around 3 p.m. on Thursday November 10, 2016 at the Canadian Tire store near Rupert Street and Grandview Highway in Vancouver. Officers responded to a call of an alleged robbery in progress. Officers arrived and confronted the male who was identified as the subject of the call. According to police, as they attempted to arrest the male, he stabbed an officer and the male was shot by police. The male died at the scene.

CCTV video footage of the scene has revealed a number of key witnesses who were filming the incident outside of the Canadian Tire. The IIO is seeking to speak with these witnesses and anyone else who saw the male’s interaction with police outside of the Canadian Tire.

The IIO is also seeking any video footage of the incident that may have already been provided to the VPD, the media or posted online.

A press briefing will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday November 15, 2016 at the IIO’s office in Surrey. The briefing will provide a timeline of the incident and the role of the IIO in this investigation.
