Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is concluding an investigation into an incident in Vancouver.
As detailed in our initial release, on June 28, 2020 Vancouver Police Department officers were searching for a man who had been involved in an earlier incident and located him riding a bicycle near the intersection of Dunsmuir and Howe streets. When the man rode away from officers, the officers followed and took the man into custody near the intersection of Robson and Burrard streets. During his arrest, the man sustained injuries.
The man has declined to provide the IIO with a statement and consented only to review of his medical records.
The IIO’s Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the available medical evidence and determined that the injuries to the man do not meet the threshold for serious harm as defined by the Police Act. Therefore, the investigation has been concluded.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
