Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded investigation 2023-022 into an incident in Abbotsford where one woman was injured.

Shortly after 5:40 p.m. on January 29, 2023, an officer with the Abbotsford Police Department was patrolling when they saw a man and woman causing a disturbance in front of a business in the 3200-block of South Fraser Way. When the officer advised the woman that she was under arrest, civilian witnesses confirm she ran from the officer into traffic on Old Yale Road where she was struck by a vehicle.

The officer provided assistance until Emergency Health Services arrived and transported her to the hospital for treatment.

The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including statements from civilian witnesses, medical information, and police records – and determined that police actions were not responsible for the woman’s decision to run into the road or her subsequent injuries.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
