Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Vancouver.
Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) states that in the early morning of January 30, 2023, a man was lodged in VPD cells without incident.
At about 5:00 p.m., observers became concerned for the man’s wellbeing and a jail nurse provided assistance. Emergency Health Services attended and transported the man to a local hospital for treatment.
The IIO has commenced an investigation, and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm whether the man’s condition meets the threshold for serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, and examining the level of care the man received while in custody.
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
