For Immediate Release
Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded investigation 2023-168 into an officer-involved shooting incident where one man sustained an injury.
At about 3:00 a.m. on June 26, 2023, officers responded to a call regarding an allegedly intoxicated male driver near the Highway 1 westbound off-ramp at 15th Street.
When police arrived, it is reported that there was an exchange of gunfire. Another officer arriving reportedly attempted to use their police vehicle to stop the man. The man was struck by the police vehicle.
The man was subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment.
No one was hit by any of the rounds fired.
On behalf of the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s General Counsel has reviewed the evidence – including video footage, medical records, and police information – and determined that the man did not sustain serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
