Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded investigation 2023-124 into an officer-involved shooting incident where one man sustained an injury.

At about 6:30 a.m. on May 12, 2023, a man driving a Mazda SUV entered the Duncan RCMP detachment parking lot and struck a patrol vehicle. One officer standing on the other side of the police vehicle was struck and injured.

A different officer than the one injured discharged his firearm. The man sustained a single gunshot injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

On behalf of the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s General Counsel has reviewed the evidence – including video footage and medical records – and determined that the driver of the Mazda did not sustain serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.
