IIO Concludes Investigation into an Arrest in Coquitlam (2024-168)

On July 19, 2024, police conducted a wellness check on the affected person at a residence on Hart Street.
Officers spoke with the person and then made the decision to apprehend the person under the Mental Health Act.
There was an interaction, and the person later self-reported serious injuries and the IIO commenced an investigation.
The Chief Civilian Director has now reviewed the evidence – including medical records and police reports – and determined that the injuries the person sustained in the interaction with police were minor and do not meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
