Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC concludes investigation into an incident in Abbotsford.

As indicated in the previous release, on June 19, 2021 at approximately 8:30 p.m., police attended an address in the 30600-block of Progressive Way and interrupted an alleged theft in progress involving two men. One of the men drove away in a Ford E350, a decommissioned ambulance, and the other was arrested at the scene without incident.

The Ford was involved in a collision with a police vehicle on Progressive Way before successfully leaving the area. It was next located near the Bradner Road rest area where it collided with a second police vehicle, injuring an officer who was standing next to the vehicle at the time it was hit. The Ford was eventually brought to a stop and the man was arrested near 232 Street and Highway 1.

The CCD has reviewed the medical evidence and determined that the injuries do not meet the threshold for serious harm, as defined by the Police Act. The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
