Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded investigation 2022-166 into an incident in Vancouver which left one man with serious injuries.

At about 7:40 p.m. on July 9, 2022, police responded to a 911 call from an apartment in the 500-block of East 8th Avenue.

When police arrived, they gained entry to the unit and spoke to a woman and started looking for the man she described. The woman reported that the man had trespassed into her home and had assaulted and unlawfully confined her.

The man was found a short time later on the ground under the fourth story balcony. Emergency Health Services attended and transported the man to a local hospital where he was found to be suffering a serious injury.

The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including video footage, information from the involved parties, and statements from civilian witnesses – and determined that police are not responsible for the man’s injuries. The IIO investigation is now concluded, and no additional information is being released at this time as charges pertaining to the incident are currently before the courts.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
