Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has concluded its investigation into the death of a woman in Boston Bar (IIO 2023-090).

On April 2, 2023, Emergency Services responded to a fire at a residence on the Trans-Canada Highway approximately seven kilometres north of Boston Bar. One woman was later found deceased inside the residence.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred as police had responded to several calls for wellness checks during the week leading up to the fire.

The IIO Investigated whether police actions or inactions played any role in the death.

On behalf of the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s General Counsel has reviewed the evidence – including police statements, 911 recordings, civilian witness statements– and determined there is no causal connection between any action or inaction of an officer and the Affected Person’s death.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
