Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has concluded its investigation into a motor vehicle incident in Burnaby and resulted in one man sustaining a serious injury on August 18, 2023.

At approximately 7:40 p.m., officers from the New Westminster Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a car near the intersection of Edmonds St and Humphries Ave.

That vehicle failed to stop for police and was later involved in collision with another vehicle nearby and two occupants were arrested.

The IIO was not notified until October 2023 that one of the vehicle’s occupants had suffered a serious injury and subsequently began an investigation.

On behalf of the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s General Counsel has reviewed the evidence – including video, witness statements, vehicle and GP data, and police statements – and determined there are no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer committed an offence.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
