IIO Seeks Witnesses to the October 2023 Death of One Man in Vancouver (2023-318)

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia is seeking witnesses to the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in his early 20s in Vancouver on October 24, 2023 (IIO 2023-318).

The Affected Person was found on Hastings Street under the overpass of the 300 block of Raymur Avenue at approximately 2:37 a.m. Emergency Health Services attended and a short time later, confirmed the man was deceased. The AP is described as being of average height with a slim build and was last seen wearing a black fleece jacket earlier in the evening.

The IIO is asking anyone who saw the man at or before the incident on or around Raymur Avenue overpass and Hastings Street around that time on October 24, or the evening of October 23 to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

Incident Summary

Shortly after 2:30 a.m. on October 24, EHS was called to a male suffering serious injuries on Hastings Street near the 300 block of Raymur Avenue underneath the overpass. The male had apparently fallen and was pronounced deceased a short time after EHS arrived. The IIO investigations is seeking to determine what led up to the incident.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
