Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. has concluded its investigation into a March 2022 incident in Nanaimo.
On March 29, 2022, a woman was reported missing from her adult care home. At approximately 6:00 p.m., Nanaimo RCMP located her at the Port Place Shopping Centre. She was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital. The next day, RCMP learned that the woman was to have surgery to repair a broken foot.
The IIO investigated to determine what role, if any, the officers’ action or inaction may have played in the woman’s foot injury.
The IIO’s Chief Civilian Director (CCD) has reviewed medical records, witness statements and police and store video.Based on this evidence, the CCD has determined that the injury did not take place while the woman was in police custody or in the presence of police, but approximately four hours after police had left the hospital.
The IIO’s investigation into this matter is therefore concluded.
