Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has concluded its investigation into the arrest of a man that occurred in Sooke on March 23, 2026.

Around 6:30 p.m., members of the Sooke RCMP responded to a residence in the Otter Point area. Officers were called to ask a man to leave the property at the request of the owner.

The man refused to leave the residence, leading to an interaction with officers during which he suffered an injury. He was arrested and taken to the RCMP detachment.

The IIO was notified of the incident three days after it occurred and started an investigation.

The chief civilian director has reviewed the evidence collected by IIO investigators – including police reports, medical records, video footage from police body-worn cameras and CCTV, photographs and radio transmissions – and has determined that the man’s injuries do not meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
