Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has concluded its investigation into the circumstances around the injury of a woman while in police cells in Port Alberni last May.

On May 24, 2025, the woman was in custody inside the Port Alberni RCMP detachment.

At one point, there was an interaction between the woman and RCMP officers.

On May 6, 2026, the woman notified the IIO of the incident and reported that she suffered injuries.

The chief civilian director has reviewed the evidence collected by IIO investigators – including police reports, a statement from the affected person, medical records, CCTV and photographs – and has determined that the woman’s injuries do not meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
