For Immediate Release

Surrey – The Independent Investigation Office of B.C. has deployed investigators to an officer-involved shooting involving Summerland RCMP.

According to police, in the early hours of Saturday July 2, 2016, an officer attempted to pull over a vehicle at Rosedale Road and Prairie Valley Road. Police report that the vehicle headed into a dead end street at Giant’s Head Mountain parkway where an interaction occurred between police and the vehicle and police fired shots.  The vehicle left the area and the police officer was uninjured.

According to police, several hours later a male attended the local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound. The serious injury sustained by the male, who is believed to be in a stable condition, may be connected to the earlier incident.

IIO Investigators will be conducting standard tasks including obtaining physical evidence from the scene, interviewing any civilian witnesses and designating and interviewing officers. The initial focus of the IIO investigation will be to determine if there is a connection to the injuries suffered by the male affected person and the actions of police.

RCMP Regional GIS and Penticton Serious Crime Unit are responsible for any concurrent investigation.

Any potential witnesses are asked to call the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.

No further information or updates will be provided at this time.
