Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has deployed investigators to a fatal officer-involved shooting in Nanaimo.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, at 10:20 a.m. police responded to a report of a male carrying a knife in the area of Norwell Drive and Highway 19A in Nanaimo. Police report they located the male nearby on Country Club Drive. Following an encounter with the male, police fired shots. The male was transported to hospital and did not survive.

IIO Investigators will be conducting standard tasks including obtaining physical evidence from the scene, interviewing any civilian witnesses and designating and interviewing officers.

The IIO will not be providing any information about the deceased; this remains the responsibility of the B.C. Coroners Service.
