Surrey. B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified of a police-involved incident in Port Coquitlam.

RCMP reported that on December 22, 2019, at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers attended an address in Port Coquitlam as part of an ongoing investigation.

Just before 5:20 p.m., an officer observed the male associated to the same residence on the Mary Hill By-Pass. The male attempted to enter vehicles on the highway.

During the arrest an interaction between the officer and male took place and the male went into medical distress. Officers and Emergency Health Services attempted first aid, but the male was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, officers’ actions or inaction may have played into the death of the male.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
