Surrey. B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified of a police-involved incident in Victoria.

The Victoria Police Department has reported that at approximately 6pm on Wednesday, December 25th, 2019, patrol officers were called to a disturbance involving an armed person at a downtown multi-unit residential building. When it was determined that the person had barricaded themselves in a suite, the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team was called to assist. The Victoria Fire Department was subsequently called when smoke was observed coming from the suite.

The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team made an emergency entry and took the suspect into custody. BC Emergency Health Services took the suspect to hospital in life-threatening condition.

The IIO has commenced an investigation.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
