Surrey. B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. confirms that an adult female involved in a police-involved incident in Victoria has died.

Victoria Police Department reported that at approximately 6.00.p.m., on December 25, 2019, officers were called to a disturbance involving an armed female at a downtown multi-unit residential building. When it was determined that the person had barricaded themselves in a suite, the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team was called to assist. The Victoria Fire Department was subsequently called when smoke was observed coming from the suite.

The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team made an emergency entry and took the female into custody. BC Emergency Health Services took the female to hospital in life-threatening condition.

On December 29, 2019, the IIO was notified that the female had died in hospital. IIO personnel have been in contact with the family and the investigation into the incident continues.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
