Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified of an incident in Penticton involving a male who died following interaction with police.

Initial information provided to the IIO by the RCMP suggests that a male was arrested and taken into custody on August 16, 2018. At 9:19 a.m. the male was found unresponsive. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. Emergency Health Services (EHS) was called and he was taken to the hospital and pronounced deceased shortly after.

IIO investigators have been deployed and will be conducting tasks including obtaining physical evidence, interviewing witnesses and reviewing available video footage.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
