Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. confirms it has been notified of a motor vehicle incident that occurred on Saturday evening in Vancouver.

Information provided to the IIO by the Vancouver Police Department suggests that on August 25, 2018, at approximately 5:oo p.m, officers attempted to pull over a suspected stolen vehicle on Main near Pender.

The driver failed to comply and was reported to continue to drive erratically and through a red light.

Shortly thereafter the vehicle collided with two civilian vehicles as they attempted to make a left turn at Prior Street on to Main Street. Four civilians were transported to hospital by Emergency Health Services.

The VPD is conducting a concurrent investigation into alleged offences that have been committed leading up to this incident.

The IIO is currently investigating the circumstances of the incident, including attempting to determine if any of the injuries meet the IIO threshold of serious injury.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
