IIO Investigates Incident in Burnaby

SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirms that its investigators have been deployed to an incident involving the Burnaby RCMP and an adult male.

Shortly before 6 a.m., on Sept. 18, 2013, RCMP officers in Burnaby were responding to a complaint at a residence near Cambridge Street. Once at the scene, officers located an adult male who appeared to be in medical distress.  Officers placed the male in the police vehicle and observed his condition deteriorating.

BC Ambulance Services was requested, and emergency medical care was rendered. The male was transported to hospital, however he did not survive. He subsequently died in hospital on Sept. 19.

The IIO was notified at 7:17 a.m. and deployed investigators immediately.  Investigators have completed initial activities including identifying and interviewing witnesses, conducting a neighbourhood canvass and obtaining other forensic evidence.  Additional support was provided by the investigator who works with affected persons and their families.

The IIO and the RCMP are working within the terms agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the chief civilian director and B.C.’s police services in July 2012.

The Burnaby RCMP remains responsible for any and all parallel investigations.

The BC Coroners Service has jurisdiction over the release of the affected person’s identity.

Due to the preliminary stage of the investigation, no additional information is available at the present time.
