Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a motor vehicle incident in Sicamous.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on May 20, 2021 at approximately 4:00 pm, police attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a vehicle in Canoe, near Salmon Arm, without success.

At approximately 4:30 pm, police again attempted to bring the vehicle to a stop on Highway 1 near the Bruhn Bridge in Sicamous. The vehicle reportedly left the road and subsequently came to a stop nearby.

Police and a bystander provided medical assistance and Emergency Health Services was called. The male driver was transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
