INFORMATION BULLETIN
Independent Investigations Office
For Immediate Release

Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of BC confirms that investigators have been deployed to an in-custody death involving the Lillooet RCMP.

According to police, at approximately 8:30 a.m. on October 14, 2015 officers were responding to a complaint related to a male causing a disturbance at the Bridge River Band Office. On arrival, officers located the male and took him into custody.

The male affected person subsequently became unresponsive prior to being transported. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he did not survive.

The IIO was notified at 11:30 a.m. and now has jurisdiction under the Police Act.  The focus of the IIO investigation will be on the actions or inactions of the officers.

Investigators are en route and will be at the scene later this afternoon.  Standard investigative activities include locating and interviewing any witnesses and collecting evidence from the scene.

The IIO will not be providing any information about the deceased; this remains the responsibility of the BC Coroners Service.

The RCMP maintain jurisdiction over any concurrent investigation into the actions of anyone who may have been involved prior to the critical incident.

Due to the preliminary stages of this investigation, no additional updates will be provided.
