Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a death in Mission after a man who had been missing was found deceased.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on March 21, 2020, a man was arrested, lodged in RCMP cells overnight and released later that day. The man police identify as having been released was reported missing on March 27, 2020.
On April 6, 2021, human remains were found in a forested area near Hillcrest Avenue. On April 27, 2021, it was confirmed that the remains are those of the man who police report as having been in custody.
The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, police actions or inaction may have played in the man’s death.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
