Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating a death in Mission involving members of the Abbotsford Police Department.

Information provided by the Abbotsford Police Department states that at about 2:00 p.m. today (February 9, 2025), police conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle that was believed to be stolen at a shopping centre in the 32500 block of London Avenue.

It is reported there was an interaction between the man and police, and the man was arrested and placed in a police vehicle. Shortly thereafter, the man reportedly went into medical distress.

Emergency Health Services were called and took the man to a hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced deceased.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and began an investigation. Initial investigative steps will determine if there was any connection between police actions and the man’s death, and if any force used during the arrest was necessary, reasonable, and proportionate under the circumstances.

The IIO is asking that anyone who saw or who has video footage of the incident to please contact the IIO at our Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
