Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a death in Saanich.

Information provided by the Saanich Police Department indicates that at approximately 5:00 p.m. on February 21, 2022, officers attended a residence in the 900-block Easter Road following a request for assistance. A man inside reportedly told police he was armed and had a hostage. When he did not comply with police direction to exit the residence, the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team was called to assist.

At about 11:30 p.m. on February 21, police entered the home and reportedly found the man to be unresponsive. The man had serious injuries that appear to have been self-inflicted and was pronounced dead at the scene. It is reported there was no one else located inside the residence.

The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions played in the death. The BC Coroners Service is also conducting an independent investigation to determine the circumstances of the death.

The IIO is asking any person with relevant information of the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
