Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a death in Surrey.
Information reported by the RCMP states that police arrested a man on April 15, 2022, and lodged him in Surrey RCMP cells.
At about 2:35 p.m. the following day, the man was reportedly found unresponsive in his cell. Medical assistance was provided, but the man was subsequently pronounced deceased.
The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the death.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
