Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a police-involved shooting incident in Grand Forks that resulted in one man sustaining a serious injury.
Information provided by the Grand Forks RCMP states that on August 12, 2023, police were made aware of an allegedly stolen vehicle in the area.
At about 9:50 a.m. on August 13, 2023, police attended a rural residence on Willow Road to follow up regarding the alleged stolen vehicle and encountered a man there who reportedly entered the residence upon police arrival and refused to exit.
Just before 5:00 p.m., it is reported that the man exited the residence with a weapon. An officer discharged their firearm, and the man sustained a serious injury. He was airlifted to a hospital for treatment, where he remains.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred. Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the incident, including the presence of any weapons, and whether the force used during the interaction was reasonable, necessary, and justified under the circumstances.
