Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a police-involved shooting incident in Vancouver.

Information from the Vancouver Police Department states that in the evening on May 5, 2022, police responded to a complaint at a hotel in the 400 block of East Hastings Street.

When police arrived, a man reportedly had a weapon and shots were fired by police. The man sustained gunshot injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The IIO was notified shortly thereafter and has commenced an investigation.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
