Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a September 2021 incident in Cranbrook where one man sustained serious injuries.

Information provided by the RCMP states that on September 9, 2021, police attempted to stop a red Pontiac Grand Prix. It is reported that the Pontiac did not stop.

The Pontiac was involved in collisions with police vehicles before coming to a stop. While being taken into custody, there was an interaction between the driver, a man, and police which included the use of a police service dog.

The IIO was notified of the incident on September 6, 2022 after the RCMP became aware of new information that the man’s injuries may meet the threshold of serious harm as defined by the Police Act. The IIO has commenced an investigation, and initial investigative steps seek to confirm the level of injury.
