Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating the injury suffered by one person on February 13, 2024 while in the custody of the Vancouver Police Department.
Information provided by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner of British Columbia states, the affected person was in VPD custody when they were taken out of a holding cell by special municipal constables.
There was an interaction outside the holding cell, the AP suffered a serious injury and was transported to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.
The IIO was notified on April 26, 2024 and immediately commenced an investigation.
Initial investigative steps will seek to clarify the circumstances surrounding the person’s injury.

Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
