Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an August 2021 incident in Prince George.

Information reported by the affected person states that at about 2:00 p.m. on August 19, 2021, there was a collision involving the female affected person’s blue Kia Rio and an RCMP officer’s silver Nissan Pathfinder on Highway 97 near Industrial Way in the Bear Lake area.

During the collision, the affected person sustained injuries. Emergency Health Services transported the woman to a hospital for treatment.

The woman’s injuries were not initially believed to be serious, and the IIO was therefore not notified at the time of the incident. The IIO was subsequently notified of the incident on April 29, 2022 and the injuries were found to meet the threshold for serious harm as defined by the Police Act, and an investigation has been commenced.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
