Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Vancouver.

Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department indicates that on August 21, 2021 at approximately 1:20 a.m., police responded to a call for assistance at a restaurant in the 5000-block of Joyce Street after a man entered holding a weapon. Following use of a less-lethal force option and a brief foot pursuit, the man was arrested near the Joyce-Collingwood bus loop.

The man was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury.

The IIO was advised of the incident the day after it occurred and has commenced an investigation into the incident.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
