Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating the injury of one woman during an interaction with police at the Burns Lake RCMP detachment.
Information provided by the RCMP states that at about 5:55 p.m. on August 4, 2022, officers responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence on Tibbets Drive. When police arrived, they arrested one woman and transported her to the Burns Lake detachment.
When at the detachment, it is reported that an altercation occurred between the woman and officers before she was lodged in a cell.
At about 5:25 a.m. the following morning, Emergency Health Services transported the woman to the hospital where she was confirmed to have suffered a serious but not life-threatening injury.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
