Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Burns Lake.
Information provided by the RCMP on August 27, 2020 indicates that earlier that day at approximately 5:00 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop near Richmond Loop on Highway 16. At the officer’s request, the man exited the vehicle. An altercation occurred between the officer and the man, and the man was arrested and transported to the RCMP detachment.
Once at the detachment, the man indicated that he was injured and Emergency Health Services (EHS) were called. The man was transported to a local area hospital by EHS where he was confirmed to have serious injuries.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
