Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. is investigating a motor vehicle incident in Campbell River.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on March 28, 2020 shortly before 4:00am, officers were responding to a call near the 2100 block of South Island Highway in Campbell River. In the course of the officers’ investigation, a civilian vehicle on the Island Highway collided with the center median and subsequently struck a tree. The passenger of the vehicle suffered serious injuries.

The IIO investigation seeks to determine what role, if any, any officer may have played in the collision.

The IIO is asking that any drivers, pedestrians, or local business owners who may have witnessed this incident or have video footage to contact the IIO Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
